I understand that this is in the public domain now, so you can watch this entire obscure 1950 film with Jimmy Durante online. As you will see, Rupert the squirrel is a little corny, but once this movie gets going, this is a great story of  a poor but generous family who receives some divine assistance as the mother says a simple prayer: “Rosalinda needs new shoes”.  This is now one of my favorite Christmas classics.
